Sodium chloride, common salt, is essential to human life. The growth of industry has increased the demand for salt, both for direct use and as a raw material for producing other chemicals. Throughout the world, the main sources of salt are sea water,  and rock salt deposits.

At Egypt, main salt resource is seawater (solar salt) and is 2.5% salt by weight. However, sodium chloride is not the only salt present at solar salt, there being appreciable amounts of calcium, magnesium and potassium cations, and sulphate and bromide anions, amongst others which are not wanted in the refined salt. However, of these, only calcium sulphate is less soluble than sodium chloride, and the recovery process relies on this. The seawater is concentrated to the point at which calcium sulphate deposits, and then transferred to crystallizing ponds where it is further concentrated, depositing sodium chloride, with the concentrating process stopped before the brine is sufficiently concentrated for other salts to crystallize out.

Result is the vacuum salt, with high purity (>99,80 %), fine cubic-crystal structure.
Many factories are present in Egypt for refining salt ; however SECOSALT is the first company in the private sector to produce Crystallized salt which is a high purity homogenous type of salt.

Although the process for salt crystallization process is more or less similar to other plants, Seco Salt’s® evaporation pan is manufactured from monel material and heat exchanger tubes are pure titanium. This guarantees the quality of refined salt by ;

- Free of cladding material coming from evaporation pan at product salt

    - Continues and stable operation to end up fine and homogenous crystal size

This technology has been designed and executed for Seco Salt’s® by UMDE and SWENSON companies.
